Use an AI coding agent from your phone
Phones are bad at running coding agents and great at checking on them. The trick is to keep the agent on a real computer and use your phone as the window. This guide shows how to do that with AgentPort, Grok Build or Google Antigravity, and a computer you own.
Why not just run the agent on the phone?
A coding agent needs your project, a shell, git, package managers and a login to the AI provider. None of that lives well on a phone, and a phone in your pocket goes to sleep. Cloud sandboxes fix the sleep problem but take your code somewhere else and give the agent a fresh, empty machine every time.
A better split:
- The agent runs on a computer that stays on: a Mac at home, a Linux PC or mini PC, or a small VPS.
- Your phone is the remote control. You type the task, watch progress, answer questions and approve steps from the phone's browser.
- The work keeps going when you lock the phone, lose signal or switch to your laptop. Come back and the chat is where you left it.
What you need
- A Mac, Linux PC or VPS with Docker running. On a fresh Linux server,
curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com | shinstalls it. - A free AgentPort account.
- Your own agent login: a Grok account for Grok Build, or a Google account for Antigravity. You pay that provider directly.
- Any phone with a modern browser. There is no app to install.
Step 1: Set up the computer once (from a laptop)
Setup needs a terminal, so do it from a laptop or over SSH:
- Sign in to AgentPort and click Add machine.
- Choose Your computer, click Copy, and paste the one-line command in a terminal on that computer.
- In about a minute the app says the computer is ready. Click Connect.
- Open the computer's settings → AI Model and sign in to Grok (a short code on xAI's page) or Antigravity (Google sign-in).
Nothing listens on a public port. The installer opens a secure outbound link for that computer, and your browser talks to it directly. Full walkthrough: Run Grok Build on your VPS.
Step 2: Open AgentPort on your phone
- Go to agentport.johnstech.in on your phone and sign in with the same account.
- Tap the menu to open the drawer, pick your computer, and it connects on its own.
- Tap New chat, pick Grok or Antigravity, and type the task.
Tip: add the page to your home screen so it opens like an app.
What works well from a phone
- Kick off tasks. "Add a dark mode toggle", "Fix the failing test", "Write a README for this repo". The agent runs on your computer while you do something else.
- Approve steps. In a Grok chat with Ask first or Auto, permission cards show up in the chat; tap Allow or Deny. Questions with options appear as buttons.
- Check progress. Thinking, tool calls and file edits show as short rows, so the chat stays readable on a small screen.
- Review changes. The file panel's Changed tab lists what git sees as modified, with a diff per file.
- Ship. With GitHub and Vercel connected under Connectors, you can say "commit this and open a PR" or "deploy a preview" from the phone.
- Switch devices. Start on the phone, finish on the laptop. Same computer, same chat, same files.
Mode, model and effort live in the composer's settings button on small screens, so the text box gets the full width.
Grok Build or Antigravity on mobile?
Both work in the same chat. The difference is approvals: Antigravity in headless mode cannot pause for a yes, so its chats run in Always approve. If you want to approve each step from your phone, use a Grok chat in Ask first or Auto. More on Antigravity: Use Google Antigravity remotely.
Safety habits
- Work inside a git repository so every change is easy to see and undo.
- Use Ask first for anything that touches production, and Always approve only on projects you trust.
- Glance at the Changed tab before you push.
FAQ
Is there an iPhone or Android app?
No app is needed. AgentPort's web app has a mobile layout and works in Safari and Chrome.
Does my code go through AgentPort's servers?
No. Your phone's browser connects straight to your computer over a secure WebSocket. AgentPort's cloud handles sign-in and the list of your computers.
Can I use Codex CLI or Claude Code from my phone?
Not inside AgentPort yet. Grok Build and Google Antigravity work today, and Codex CLI and Claude Code are on the roadmap. Until then you can run them on a server yourself with tmux and an SSH app: Run Codex CLI and Claude Code on a VPS.
What does it cost?
AgentPort Free covers 1 computer. Pro is $27/month for up to 3. Model usage is between you and the AI provider.
Try it on your own computer
The Free plan covers 1 computer. Pro is $27/month for up to 3. You bring the AI login and pay that provider directly.
